Mondo Nougat, set to celebrate 20 years in the Swan Valley in 2025, has deep roots in the region. The Romeo family first began making nougat in 1991, using a recipe from their hometown of Taurianova, Italy. By 2000, Mondo Nougat had established itself as a year-round confectionery operation.

Morish Nuts, renowned for its caramel-coated Australian nuts, has been a key player in the confectionery market for over 30 years. Founder Archie Moroni’s decision to retire created the opportunity for Mondino Pty Ltd to take over operations.

The two businesses have cohabitated at 640 Great Northern Highway, Herne Hill for 12 years and will continue to operate from the shared retail and production facilities. Moroni will remain on as an advisor for 12 months to assist with the transition.

Moroni expressed confidence in the future of Morish Nuts under the Romeo family, saying the acquisition will allow the brand to thrive while he and his partner Marie Mapp take a well-deserved step back.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen both brands’ reputation and visibility in the competitive confectionery market. It will also create opportunities for expanded national and international distribution.

The Morish Nuts store at Fremantle Markets will continue operating under its current name but will now offer an increased selection of Mondo Nougat products and diversify into other Western Australian-made artisan food lines.

Andrea Romeo, managing director of Mondino Pty Ltd, sees the acquisition as an opportunity to build on Moroni’s legacy. He emphasised Mondo Nougat’s commitment to “tradition, innovation, and excellence” and outlined plans to expand both brands into new markets and collaborate with other WA producers.

The deal positions Mondino Pty Ltd as a leading manufacturer and distributor of artisanal Australian-made confectionery products.
