Backcountry will continue to operate under its own brand name. The acquisition expands CSC's portfolio to over 10 brands. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Melanie Cox, Backcountry CEO, stated that joining CSC and using its resources will help the outdoor retailer grow its market presence.

Justin Yoshimura, CSC founder and CEO, cited several reasons for the acquisition. These include Backcountry's wide product range, strong connections with the outdoor community, and loyal customer base. Yoshimura believes there's significant growth potential by combining Backcountry's strengths with CSC's digital innovation focus.

CSC specialises in acquiring financially distressed retailers and transforming them into digitally-led businesses. The company uses its experience in market intelligence, supply chain, and multi-channel sales to create curated customer experiences.

Backcountry, founded in 1996 as Backcountry.com, is a Utah-based retailer offering high-performance outdoor gear and apparel. The company also provides expert-level gear knowledge for various outdoor activities.

In November, Backcountry announced plans to expand into wholesale, offering its namesake brand at other national retailers this year. The company has been producing its own label products since 2018, including Gore-Tex fabric anoraks and ski jackets.

Backcountry operates an online store and nine brick-and-mortar locations across the United States. Three new stores opened last year in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Palo Alto.

CSC's portfolio includes several other notable acquisitions. In 2020, the company bought Sur La Table out of bankruptcy in a joint venture with Marquee Brands for nearly $89 million. Other brands in CSC's portfolio include One Kings Lane, Cherry Man Industries, Touch of Modern, and Home Designs.
