  • Deal type: Acquisition of operational assets

Marley Spoon is also in the process of buying bistroMD, a health-focused meal subscription service. Once these deals are done, FreshRealm will handle orders for all of Marley Spoon’s brands, including bistroMD, Martha & Marley Spoon, and Dinnerly.

FreshRealm states that this acquisition will help the company offer more variety and run more efficiently on a larger scale. Michael Lippold, the CEO of FreshRealm, sees this move as a key step in changing the meal kit market, which is worth $900 billion. He aims to support meal providers like Marley Spoon and bistroMD in delivering meals more effectively.

This acquisition comes during a time of big changes in the meal kit sector. It follows the recent purchase of Blue Apron by Wonder Group for $103 million. Earlier, in June 2023, FreshRealm had bought a major part of Blue Apron's operations for $25 million, including their fulfillment centers. A long-term agreement was also made, making FreshRealm the sole supplier of Blue Apron’s meal kits for ten years, showing FreshRealm's growing influence in the market.
