Airbnb has officially announced the acquisition of GamePlanner.AI, a new AI startup. The deal, as reported by CNBC, is estimated to be around $200 million, although this figure remains unconfirmed.

Transaction Snapshot

  • Deal value: Approximately $200 million
  • Deal type: Acquisition
  • Founders: Adam Cheyer and Siamak Hodjat

GamePlanner.AI was co-founded by Adam Cheyer and Siamak Hodjat. Cheyer is known for co-launching Siri, which was later acquired by Apple, forming the foundation for Apple's AI-powered Siri assistant. Hodjat has previously collaborated with Cheyer at Viv Labs, a company acquired by Samsung that contributed to the development of Samsung's AI assistant, Bixby.

The exact nature of GamePlanner's operations is not well-documented. A LinkedIn search reveals limited information, with only two associates, Gabe Greenbaum and Joseph Huang, being publicly associated with the company. The company's web presence has been minimal, with the Internet Archive's earliest capture of their website showing a blank page as of December 2021.

Brian Chesky, Airbnb's CEO and co-founder, in a statement, hinted at GamePlanner's role in combining AI and design to create AI-driven experiences. He emphasized the importance of AI in shaping future technologies and expressed confidence in the GamePlanner team's ability to integrate their expertise into Airbnb's platform. Chesky's vision for Airbnb includes the development of a generative AI-based "travel concierge" capable of learning and adapting to travelers' needs.

This acquisition, marking Airbnb's first since 2019 and its first as a public company, underscores the company's commitment to advancing its AI capabilities and enhancing its services in the travel and tourism industry.
