Advent International acquires Brazilian haircare brand Skala Cosméticos

Global private equity firm Advent International has announced its acquisition of Skala Cosméticos, a leading vegan haircare brand based in Uberaba, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Skala Cosméticos, established in 1986, has emerged as one of the fastest-growing entities in Brazil's beauty sector, boasting an annual growth rate of approximately 30% in recent years. This strategic acquisition is set to bolster Skala's manufacturing capabilities and expand its distribution network, further solidifying its presence both domestically and on the international stage.

Skala Cosméticos stands as the fourth largest haircare brand in Brazil, commanding a significant presence in over 45% of Brazilian households and exporting its products to more than 40 countries worldwide. The brand is particularly renowned in the hair mask category, underscoring its commitment to innovation and quality in the vegan beauty product space.

The acquisition by Advent International is aimed at driving Skala's growth by enhancing its operational excellence and fostering innovation at scale. Antonio Sousa, Skala's CEO for the past eight years, expressed optimism about the partnership with Advent, emphasizing its potential to accelerate growth and expand market reach.

As part of the acquisition agreement, Cyro Gazola, with extensive experience in the Brazilian consumer goods sector and a former President and CEO of Caloi, will take on the role of CEO at Skala. The existing executive team, including Antonio Sousa, Maria Claudia Lacerda, and Publio Emilio Rocha, will remain as shareholders and join the company's Board of Directors, alongside professionals from Advent and two other industry experts, Alberto Carvalho and Andrea Mota.

This acquisition marks a significant milestone in Advent International's investment portfolio, which includes notable investments in the beauty care sector such as Olaplex, Orveon, and Parfums de Marly. The investment in Skala Cosméticos comes from Advent's $2 billion LAPEF VII fund, dedicated to investments in Latin America, showcasing the firm's commitment to fostering growth and innovation in the region's consumer goods and retail sectors.
